Possible Applications
In wiring and assembly lines, rotary encoders track the angular position of feed reels that supply continuous wire, cable, or flexible tubing to automated cutting, stripping, and termination stations. Mounted directly on the reel spindle or on a tensioning roller, the encoder converts each degree of rotation into a pulse stream that the line controller uses to calculate remaining material length, adjust feed speed, and trigger precise cut-off points. Because the reel diameter shrinks as material unwinds, the encoder’s feedback lets the system compensate in real time, preventing slack or over-tension that could misalign conductors or damage insulation. On high-speed harness assembly tables, the same encoder signal synchronizes the indexing of crimping heads with the advancing wire, ensuring consistent terminations at rates up to several hundred cycles per minute. Operators rely on the encoder’s output to monitor inventory without stopping production, switching reels only when the countdown reaches a preset threshold. In adjacent sectors such as tire manufacturing, similar encoders measure the rotation of extruder screws or calender rolls, but in wiring lines their role remains focused on maintaining uninterrupted, accurate material flow through every assembly step.
