The welding robot’s arm pauses mid-air, its laser seam tracker locked onto the roof panel seam. A gap of just a few centimetres separates the sensor from the workpiece—too narrow for the robot’s standard reach. That’s when the extension spacer does its work: mounted between the robot flange and the end-effector, it shifts the sensor outward without altering the programmed path. The laser stays precisely on target, the weld bead follows the seam, and the body-in-white moves down the line without interruption. Every shift, the same spacer enables the robot to handle multiple vehicle models whose joint locations vary by only millimetres, avoiding costly re-teaching or tool changes. In the adjacent press shop, the same spacer appears between the die and the quick-change adapter. When a new stamping program begins, the spacer compensates for slight variations in die height, ensuring the press ram engages the blank at the exact stroke point. Operators swap spacers in minutes, keeping the line running while maintaining consistent part quality across different material gauges.
