Actuator – How Industrial Components Work

Actuator – How Industrial Components Work

An actuator is a component of a machine responsible for moving and controlling a mechanism or system, for example by opening a valve. Simply put, it’s an “engine.”

An actuator requires a control signal and a power source. The control signal is relatively low in energy and may be electrical voltage or current, pneumatic or hydraulic fluid pressure, or even human force. Its main power source may be electric current, hydraulic pressure or pneumatic pressure. When receiving a control signal, an actuator responds by converting energy from the source into mechanical motion. In the electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic sense, it is a form of automation or automatic control.

An actuator is a mechanism by which a control system acts to perform an operation or task. The control system may be simple (a fixed mechanical or electronic system), software-based (e.g., a printer driver, robot control system), human, or other input.

Mechanical Design of Electric Motors

The importance of electric motors is well known in different fields of engineering. The book provides comprehensive coverage of different types of electric motors, including DC motors, three-phase and single-phase asynchronous motors, synchronous motors, universal motor, AC servo motor, asynchronous linear motor, and stepper motors. The book covers all the details of DC motors including the torque equation, e.m.f. feedback, characteristics, starter types, speed control methods and applications.

The book also covers the various methods of testing DC motors, such as the Swinburne test, braking test, deceleration test, field test and Hopkinson test. The book explains three-phase asynchronous motors in detail. It includes production of rotating magnetic field, construction, operation, effect of slip, torque equation, torque ratios, torque-slip characteristics, losses, power flow, equivalent circuit, effect of harmonics on performance, pie chart and applications. This chapter also includes the discussion of asynchronous generator. The book teaches the different starting methods and speed control methods of three-phase asynchronous motors. The book incorporates the explanation of different single-phase asynchronous motors. Synchronous motor chapter provides detailed discussion of construction, principle of operation, on-load behavior, phasor diagram analysis, Vee and inverted Vee curves, pumping, synchronous capacitor and applications. The book also teaches the different special machines, such as single-phase commutator motors, universal motor, AC servo motor, asynchronous linear motor and stepper motors. The book uses clear and lucid language to explain each topic. The book provides the logical method of explaining the different complicated topics and the step-by-step methods for easy understanding. Each chapter is well supported by necessary illustrations, self-explanatory diagrams and a variety of solved problems. The book explains the philosophy of the subject, which makes understanding the concepts very clear and makes the subject more interesting.
