Pumps – How Industrial Components Work
A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes mixtures, through mechanical action, typically converted from electrical energy into hydraulic energy. Pumps can be classified into three main groups based on the method used to move the fluid: direct lift, positive displacement and gravity pumps
Pumps operate via a specific mechanism (typically reciprocating or rotary) and consume energy to perform mechanical work in moving the fluid. Pumps operate through many energy sources, including manual operation, electricity, motors or wind power, and are available in many sizes, from microscopic ones for medical applications to large industrial pumps.
Mechanical pumps are used in a wide range of applications such as pumping water from wells, aquarium filtration, pond filtration and aeration, in the automotive industry for water cooling and fuel injection, in the energy industry for pumping oil and natural gas or for the operation of cooling towers and other components of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In the medical industry, pumps are used for biochemical processes in the development and production of medicines, and as artificial substitutes for body parts, particularly artificial hearts and penile prostheses.
When a case contains only one rotating impeller, it is called a single-stage pump. When a casing contains two or more rotating impellers, it is called a double or multi-stage pump.
