Pumps – Troubleshooting and Repair
A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes dense-fluid mixtures, by mechanical action, typically converted from electrical energy to hydraulic energy. Pumps can be classified into three main groups based on the method used to move the fluid: direct lift pumps, positive displacement pumps and gravity pumps
Pumps operate by a specific mechanism (typically reciprocating or rotary) and consume energy to perform mechanical work that moves the fluid. The pumps operate through various energy sources, including manual operation, electricity, motors or wind power, and are available in many sizes, from microscopic for medical applications to large industrial pumps.
Mechanical pumps find applications in a wide range of industries, such as water extraction from wells, aquarium filtration, pond filtration and aeration, in the automotive industry for water cooling and fuel injection, in the energy sector for pumping oil and natural gas or for the operation of cooling towers and other components of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In the medical industry, pumps are used for biochemical processes in drug development and manufacturing, and as artificial substitutes for body parts, particularly the artificial heart and phallic prosthesis.
When a case contains only one rotating impeller, it is called a single-stage pump. When a casing contains two or more rotating impellers, it is called a double-stage or multi-stage pump.
