Every precision machining line in a modern automotive powertrain plant depends on steady, chip-free turning of crankshafts and camshafts. The steady rests that hold these long, slender workpieces in place rely on a small but critical sealing strip—this wiper—pressed into the steady rest’s guide housing. Its job is to block swarf, coolant, and fine metal dust from entering the bearing raceways of the support rollers. When the steady rest clamps onto a rotating shaft, the wiper’s lip rides lightly against the journal surface, scraping away debris before it can migrate into the bearing. Without this barrier, the rollers would wear prematurely, causing run-out that ruins surface finish and dimensional accuracy. In high-volume cylinder-head machining, the same wiper is fitted to the guide blocks of deep-hole boring units, where it keeps the guide bushings clean so the tool remains concentric throughout the cut. The result is consistent bore geometry, fewer tool changes, and uninterrupted production of engine blocks.
