In high-speed web offset presses, Baumüller speed sensors are mounted directly on the main drive shaft or on the infeed and outfeed rollers of the printing unit. Their role is to measure the instantaneous surface speed of the paper web as it travels through the press at speeds up to 15 meters per second. The sensor’s pulse train is fed into the press control system, where it is compared against the setpoint speed of the drive motor. Any mismatch triggers an immediate adjustment of motor torque, keeping the web tension constant across the entire length of the press—from the unwind stand through the printing towers to the folder. Without this real-time feedback, even a slight speed deviation would cause register errors, ink smearing, or web breaks, especially during acceleration or deceleration phases. Operators rely on the sensor’s output not only for closed-loop control but also for diagnostic displays that show actual web speed on the HMI, enabling quick troubleshooting during color changes or substrate switches. In adjacent sectors such as packaging converting lines, the same sensor type is fitted to laminating rollers to synchronize adhesive application with substrate speed.
