Fire Suppression System Testing Guide: Agent Level Testing, Nozzle Inspection, Detection Panel Testing

1. Purpose and scope of application

This guide is intended for technicians and maintenance managers who perform inspection and maintenance of fire extinguishing systems in industrial installations of Ukraine. The guide covers agent level testing, nozzle inspection, and detection panel testing. These actions are performed regularly, as part of scheduled maintenance, and after any malfunction or use case of the system.

2. Preliminary safety measures

It is important to perform a lockout and isolation (LOTO) before any technical intervention in the fire extinguishing system.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE): work gloves, headgear, protective equipment against harmful substances (if the agent is chemical).
Turn off system power and disconnect all power sources before starting work.

3. Necessary tools and materials

Tool / material Specification Quantity
Wrench with a micrometer 0-25 mm 1
Torque head with different stretch 10-50 Nm 1
Multimeter 0-250 V, 0-10 A, 0-500 MΩ 1
Alligator tongs 10-50 mm 2
Laser for measurement of centering 0.02 mm accuracy 1
Agent Sampling Container 500 ml 1
Data recording paper — 1

4. Inspection before service

Item Verification Acceptance / rejection criterion Notes
1 Checking the power supply of the system No voltage on the power supply Perform LOTTO
2 Visual inspection of nozzles No sanded or greased holes The nozzles must be clean
3 Checking the status of the detection panel No physical damage Check visually
4 Checking the pressure level of the agent Pressure ≥ 3.5 bar Use a pressure gauge
5 Checking connections There are no open or failed connections Check visually

5. Sequence of actions

  1. System shutdown

Do the LOTTO: Power down the system, place the Do Not Use sign and secure it. Use a multimeter to check for no voltage. Bug: Failure to complete the LOTTO results in injuries or an explosion.

  2. Visual nozzle inspection

Use a micrometer to measure the diameter of the nozzle holes. The dimensions should be within 1.5–2.0 mm. Check for grease or wear. Bug: Incorrect visual inspection may miss greasing.

  3. Agent Pressure Measurement

Use a pressure gauge to measure the agent pressure in the tank. The pressure should be ≥ 3.5 bar. If the pressure is below 3.0 bar, top up. Error: incorrect pressure measurement leads to incomplete system operation.

  4. Testing the detection panel

Use a multimeter to check the voltage on the input pins of the panel. The voltage should be 230 V, 50 Hz. If not, check connections and power. Error: Incorrect multimeter settings lead to incorrect results.

  5. Checking connections

Use a multimeter to check the resistance of all electrical connections. Resistance should be ≤ 0.1 Ohm. If the resistance is higher than 0.5 ohms, replace the wires. Bug: Improperly checking connections can cause a crash.

  6. Centering measurement

Use the laser to measure the centering of the nozzles. Centering should be ≤ 0.05 mm. If the eccentricity exceeds 0.1 mm, adjust. Bug: incorrect centration measurement results in uneven agent distribution.

  7. Returning the system to working condition

Restore power to the system, remove the Do Not Use label, and test the system for operation. Bug: Failure to perform LOTO before launch can result in injuries.

6. Inspection after service

Test Expected result Actual result Pass / Not pass
1 Agent pressure ≥ 3.5 bar — —
2 Centering of nozzles ≤ 0.05 mm — —
3 The voltage of the detection panel is 230 V — —
4 Connection resistance ≤ 0.1 Ohm — —
5 System functioning without errors — —

7. Debugging guide

Symptom A possible reason Correction
The system does not respond to the test Incorrect power supply Check the power supply and perform LOTTO
Low agent pressure Insufficient agent level Return the agent level to 3.5 bar
Centering error Incorrect measurement or centering Check centering with the laser
Detection panel failure Damage to contacts or power supply Replace contacts or restore power
Agent explosion or runout Improper nozzle opening Check the opening of the nozzles

8. Recommended maintenance schedule

Task Frequency Estimated duration Skill level
Agent level check monthly 30 min Primary
Nozzle inspection Quarter 45 min Average
Testing the detection panel Half a year 1 hour Tall
Centering nozzles Annually 2 hours Tall
Return of the agent Annually 1 hour Tall
