1. Problem Description and Scope

This guide is intended for solving the problem of incorrect conveyor belt movement, which may lead to incorrect load distribution, chain wear, loss of productivity and danger to personnel. The devices are applicable to conveyors used in industrial production, including food, chemical, energy and transportation sectors. Compliance with standards DSTU, EN and ISO is critical for ensuring safety and efficiency.

Severity classification: Critical — incorrect belt movement may lead to explosion, blockage, disruption of the production process or loss of productivity.

2. Safety Precautions

Energy retention: before performing diagnostics, carry out a check for residual energy in the system, especially in conveyor systems with hydraulic drive or electric drive.

Dangerous conditions: injury or disruption of the production process may occur in the absence of energy isolation or equipment.

3. Required diagnostic tools

Tool Name Model/Specification Measurement range Purpose
Multimeter Fluke 289 0-2000 V, 0-200 mA Voltage and current measurement for checking electrical connections
Vibration Analyzer Model 9000A 0-10000 Hz Vibration characteristic analysis for detection of imbalance or incorrect centring
Thermal camera FLIR T650 -20°C to 1000°C Detection of thermal anomalies at connection points or wear locations
Micrometer Dial Caliper 200 mm 0.01 mm Measurement of distances, radii, clearances
Rule 2000 mm 1 mm Distance Evaluation and Centering

4. Initial assessment: check-list

Item Description Action
1 Operating Conditions Record temperature, humidity, rotational speed
2 New changes Check whether changes have been made to the system, for example, chain replacement or change of load
3 History of Alarms Check diagnostic messages and alarms
4 Mark on the chain Check for signs of wear or incorrect braiding
5 Balancing Check whether the balancing meets the standards

5. Systematic Diagnosis: Decision Tree

  1. Symptom: The belt deviates to the left
    1. Check the left pulley alignment
    2. If the alignment meets the standards, check the chain tension
    3. If the tension is correct, check the chain link splice
  2. Symptom: The belt deviates to the right
    1. Check the alignment of the right pulley
    2. If the alignment meets the standards, check the chain tension
    3. If the tension is correct, check the chain link splice
  3. Symptom: The belt deviates in both directions
    1. Check the system balance
    2. If the balance meets the standards, check the drum alignment
    3. If the alignment meets the standards, check the chain tension

6. Matrix of Causes of Defects

Symptom Possible cause (validity) Diagnostic Test Expected result
The tape deflects to the left Incorrect centering of the left drum (100%) Measure the eccentricity of the left drum Centring > 0.5 mm
The tape deflects to the right Incorrect centering of the right drum (100%) Measure the runout of the right drum Centring > 0.5 mm
The tape deflects in both directions Incorrect chain tension (80%) Measure chain tension Tension < 300 N
The tape deflects in both directions Incorrect chain pitch (70%) Visually inspect the splice Detect unevenness or wear

7. Root Cause Analysis

7.1 Improper Drum Alignment

Critical cause: incorrect drum alignment may lead to improper load distribution, chain wear and blockage. Drum alignment exceeds 0.5 mm.

Diagnosis: Use a ruler or micrometer to measure the eccentricity of the drum. Eccentricity is measured from the center of the drum to the chain axis.

Повернення: Відцентрування барабану має бути у межах 0.1–0.3 мм. Виконайте коректування відцентрування за допомогою регулювальних гвинтів.

7.2 Incorrect Chain Tension

Important reason: incorrect chain tension causes deviation, wear, loss of efficiency. Chain tension less than 300 N.

Diagnosis: Use a torque wrench or a puller to measure the tension. Tension is measured in the direction perpendicular to the chain movement.

Повернення: Натяг ланцюга має бути у межах 300–500 Н. Виконайте регулювання натягу за допомогою натяжного ролика.

7.3 Incorrect Chain Lashing

Important reason: incorrect braiding causes deviation, wear, loss of efficiency. Braiding does not meet the standards.

Diagnosis: Use visual inspection or a micrometer to measure the distances between the interlocked teeth.

Повернення: Сплічіння має бути у межах 0.1–0.3 мм. Виконайте повторне сплічіння за допомогою спеціального пристрою.

8. Step-by-step correction procedure

8.1 Drum Centring

  1. Measure the eccentricity of the drum (micrometer, ruler).
  2. If the misalignment > 0.5 mm, perform correction using the adjustment screws.
  3. Check the balancing after correction.

8.2 Chain Slack

  1. Measure the chain tension (torque wrench, pull test stand).
  2. If tension < 300 N, perform tension adjustment using the tension roller.
  3. Check the tension after adjustment.

8.3 Chain Lashing

  1. Perform a visual inspection of the splined teeth.
  2. If unevenness or wear is detected, perform re-lacing using a special device.
  3. Check the coupling after adjustment.

9. Preventive Measures

Root Cause Preventive strategy Control Method Recommended interval
Incorrect drum alignment Regular checking of balancing Micrometer, ruler Weekly
Incorrect chain tension Regular tension adjustment Torque wrench Monthly
Incorrect chain pitch Regular chain link Micrometer Annually
